John R. Oishei Children's Hospital

Buffalo, New York

After moving into its brand new facility in 2017, the Oishei Children’s Hospital (OCH) began planning a series of small renovation projects to improve the staff and patient experience.  Most of the projects are still being designed, and are scheduled to be completed this year.

Attending Physicians' Lounge: The first of our OCH projects to be completed is the conversion of an underused family lounge to an attending physicians’ lounge on the Labor & Delivery floor.  The work involved the installation of new furniture and built-ins and new accent paints on the walls to coordinate with the existing flooring, ceiling, and lighting.

Emergency Department Waiting Room:  The ED waiting room is being redesigned as a phased project to reduce downtime and minimize disruption.  The existing space limits visibility from the security desk, so it will be opened up to allow clearer sightlines.  The check-in area will be relocated to be more central and to allow for easier movement between the triage area and the waiting area.

Operating Rooms:  When the hospital was originally built, two planned operating rooms were shelled for future development.  High demand has moved up the renovation schedule, and these two spaces are currently being designed.  Our team is working collaboratively with the surgical and administrative staff to develop each room to the highly specialized needs of the facility.

Winter Garden:  Designed in partnership with Joy Kuebler Landscape Architect, this 400-square-foot, double-height space provides views towards Buffalo's downtown, and offers a quiet contemplative space in a busy urban hospital.  See alsoWinter Garden page.
